Aufgabe is an annual journal of new American poetry, essays, notes, reviews, talks and poetry in translation. Each issue features a guest edited selection of work from outside the U.S. in English translation.
"As translation is a mode of its own, the task of the translator, too, may be regarded as distinct and clearly differentiated from the task of the poet...
Unlike a work of literature, translation does not find itself in the center of the language forest but on the outside facing the wooded ridge; it calls into it without entering, aiming at that single spot where the echo is able to give, in its own language, the reverberation of the work in the alien one."
from "The Task of the Translator," Walter Benjamin
("Die Aufgabe des Ubersetzers")
Harry Zohn, translator
